Delegates were told how students are now able to study for an International Foundation Group (IFG) Foundation or pre-masters programme at several locations across Accra before progression to undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the UK. They also learnt about the role of Transnational Education (TNE) in skills development, the value of public-private partnerships, student scholarships and the potential of Ghana as a regional education hub.

The event was a great success and positions IFG Ghana as a credible international educational partner who can address the local skills gap and promote youth mobility to students in Ghana.

The group also had time to visit two London based universities, the University of East London (UEL), Dockland Campus and Brunel University in Uxbridge.  This gave them an insight into university life in the UK and the facilities at two of IFG university progression options that our students can choose after their Foundation Programme.

Michael, Tatiana and Aminjon had the chance to meet with potential students and connect with local education leaders in the cities of Dushanbe, Bokhtar and Khujand. The event was a great success and it was a pleasure to share more about our foundation and pre-master’s programmes and to strengthen our relationship with this vibrant, ambitious academic community.

One-to-one meetings are face-to-face for IFG London students, but for others it is online with our Academic Director, Michael Addison, who is based in London. So recently all IFG Abu Dhabi met online with Michael for a one-to-one discussion on their university and course options and the best choices for their future career. At the end of the session students received recommendations based on their preferred courses, university location, career aspirations and university clubs and societies. Plus importantly details of accommodation and living costs in the UK.

After discussing their options with their parents, students will be ready to make their final choices and continue on their path to undergraduate study in the UK.

A Personal Statement is a 2,000 to 4,000 character essay that is the students’ opportunity to tell universities about themselves and why they should be offered a place. IFG Abu Dhabi students received a detailed presentation by their Study Skills lecturer, where they learnt the purpose of a Personal Statement, its structure, what to include and what to leave out. They also learnt what plagiarism is and were given guidance on how to avoid it. These students have now started writing the first drafts of their Personal Statements.

Student mentors aid with the difficulties new students face during their Foundation; the assistance and support they receive covers all areas of academic life: doing coursework, time management, meeting deadlines, preparing for presentations and projects as well as studying for exams. Student mentors also support the wellbeing of new students and give them advice on how to manage stress.

After all, who’s better at guiding you than someone who’s travelled the path you aspire to follow?!
