Pre-sessional for Postgraduate Studies

This short three-month Pre-Masters programme is designed for students who have completed their first degrees but who want to prepare for study at masters level by improving their Academic English and Study Skills. The course helps students to develop their language skills and achieve the standard required to meet university language entry requirements.

Our Pre-Masters also helps students to prepare for the style of teaching and learning required at postgraduate level, developing research skills, understanding how to avoid plagiarism, and how to make effective academic presentations.

Students are taught in small classes allowing our tutors to give each student individual support and attention.

A key part of the course is the one-to-one advice given to students in choosing the right university and in all parts of the university application process.

The course is delivered over three months in IFG centres or can be studied online in our virtual classroom.

Course Content

The main focus of the course is to develop the Academic English skills required to meet university entry requirements. These include;

  • improving grammatical skills;
  • increasing range of general and specialised vocabulary;
  • enhancing sentence and paragraph structure;
  • improving reading skills and identifying key information and arguments;
  • interpreting tables and graphs;
  • tackling multiple choice questions;
  • speaking in a lucid and fluent manner.

Other topics include:

  • structuring academic reports;
  • writing well-structured essays;
  • quantitative and qualitative research skills;
  • avoiding plagiarism;
  • constructing and delivering academic presentations;
  • interview and negotiation skills.
Entry Requirements

Students will normally have successfully completed a degree. Some diplomas at higher education level might also meet the entry requirements.

Students must have an English language level equivalent to 5.5 IELTS with minimum of 5.0 in reading and writing. For students who do not have this level of English, Pre-Sessional courses are available. Click here to find out more.

IFG Pre-Masters Courses September 2024

As our teaching centres are open, we offer the option of either joining us in London or Abu Dhabi or studying online in our virtual classroom.

In January, if you have been studying online, then you can either continue to do this or complete your course with us at one of our centres until June.
