Pharos

We’ve had our moodle for over three years now and never got round to giving it a name. It’s a bit like having a pet dog and calling it “Dog”. Anyway, we’ve just been through the christening process and invited all teachers to suggest names. It was soon pretty obvious that the creativity levels of our teachers far exceeded mine and we had numerous good options to choose from.

Suggestions fell into two main categories – famous and inspiring figures from the past such as Euclid, Lovelace and Lamarr, and words which, in some way, encapsulated what a library should be about. In the end, we went for the latter and chose Pharos. I like the idea of a library or resource bank being seen as a guiding lighting for students, helping them to go further and arrive at their destination of university safely. I suppose we could have just called it “Lighthouse” but we wanted to try and appear a little bit erudite and also I think it’s good to have a name which encourages people to ponder why we chose it.

Anyway, our pet dog now has a name and we look forward to many years of lighting student journeys in the future.
